5 Reasons Men Need to Start a Daily Skin Regimen

by Sund Kobayashi |

I get it. You’re a dude with places to go, people to see, and business to take care. There are a number of excuses why you do not stick to a daily skin regimen:

  • “I don’t have time”
  • “I have to walk the dog in the mornings”
  • “I have to drop off my kids at school”
  • “I go to work early in the morning”
  • “I’m too tired at night”
  • “I don’t need a skin regimen, my skin is fine”
  • “Skincare? Pffffff, skincare is for women”

It's easy to come up with excuses, but it’s also easy to incorporate a skincare routine that is fast, simple, and highly effective. Not only will you look better, but there are surprising benefits to having a daily skin regimen. Let's examine 5 reasons why you should start today.

Having a daily skin care regimen builds discipline. Why is building discipline important? As Jim Rohn once said,  "success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines, practiced every single day". While simple disciplines are easy to do the reality is not everyone does it. These are missed opportunities that have a rippling effect.

In a commencement speech at the University of Texas, retired U.S. Navy Admiral Seal William H. McCraven shared that making his bed every day was one of the most powerful lessons he learned during his time as a Navy SEAL. "If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you do another task, and another, and another. And by the end of the day, that one task completed will turn into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also re-enforce the fact that the little things matter. If you can't do the little things right, you can't do the big things right". Similarly, having a morning and evening skin care routine can have the same effect. Plus, it will make your skin more healthy and attractive!

Having a daily skin regimen not only builds discipline, but it can also increase your overall productivity. In the book, "The Power of Habit", Charles Duhigg states that building a "keystone habit" can lead to other good habits which then starts a chain reaction of smart choices that can produce a number of positive outcomes.

Let's put this to the test. Say you develop your skin regimen into a keystone habit. Perhaps your initial goal is to have clear skin, but this habit can also lead to positive unintended outcomes like:

  • Becoming more productive each day
  • Reducing self-consciousness or social anxiety
  • Improves your overall mood
  • Helps keep you focus
  • Boosts confidence

While your original goal might have been to have clear skin, this keystone habit could generate a number of positive effects.

Let's zoom in on one of the unintended benefits and talk about how a daily skin regimen can increase your confidence. When you look good, you feel good, and if you feel good, you do good. We live in a world where first impressions can make or break you, whether it's a job interview, a first date, or a serendipitous encounter with a cute girl at the market. The first thing people see is your face and if you feel good about the way you look naturally you will have more confidence in the way you walk, the way you talk, and the way you carry yourself.

It is easier and cheaper to maintain healthy skin than to remedy damaged skin in the long run. Your skin is the outer layer of your body, and just like your body if you don't work out on a regular basis it will lose its form and turn into fat. You will become out of shape, and it will take more time, energy, and effort to get back into shape than simply maintaining it.

Your skin is no different! You can run into different types of skin problems if you don't maintain it like hyperpigmentation, acne, scarring, and wrinkles.  Having a daily skin regimen is conceptually the same as working out everyday - it will help keep your skin looking healthy and can prevent high cost skin treatments in the future.

At the end of the day, having a daily skin regimen is about taking care of your physical self. You might be surprised at how enjoyable it can be if you have an open mind and embrace the experience. After all, your skin is the heaviest and largest organ of the human body. It shields us from the sun, protects us from the cold, and helps us fight germs and other harmful pollutants. We need to take care of it so that it takes care of us.

Balancing work, family, friends, kids, and life is hard, but adding a simple skin care routine is too easy and too beneficial to neglect. You don't need a long and complex skin care regimen to have great looking skin, but you do need to making it a daily discipline to start seeing all of its positive effects. So what are you waiting for?
